Grant Horvat and the Bryan Bros have marked a new era for YouTube Golf. In what seemed like a slow news day for the golfing world, quickly turned exciting with the announcement of YourGolfTour (YGT for short). Each tournament will have a 16-player field, consisting mainly of high-level golf YouTubers. The tour will kick off its inaugural event at Pursell Farms, a place that was practically the pioneer in hosting YouTubers; first hosting Garrett Clark of gm_golf almost 6 years ago today. There’s a lot to unpack, and right now there are more questions than answers, but here’s what we do know.

The Field

Perhaps the biggest question mark when YGT was announced was who’s going to be competing. Plenty of names were passed around, including Bobby Berger of BobDoesSports and even Frankie Borrelli of ForePlay Golf. Yet, it looks like YGT will leave the Internet Invitational format for Barstool. Instead, YGT is prioritizing talent over popularity, highlighted by Grant’s tweet below.

I wanted to make this clear regarding the tour launch today. We are starting with the 16 hand selected top golfers in the creater world, not all of which are giant names. The selection was based first on skill, then personality.

“However, our goal is to evolve even bigger and host massive qualifiers in the future. We want this to be a viable option for players that have maybe given up on pro golf but are great competitors.”

Both Ryan Ruffels, as well as Luke Kwon seem like the perfect fit, considering their respective followings and previous professional experience. Brad Dalke and Sean Walsh would be fun additions in addition. Yet, a contract with Good Good makes this more of a hopeful wish than a realistic possibility. Taco Golf and Tooms are two other likely additions due to their professional background along with their amiable personalities. A few other names such as Micah Morris, Evan Thompson, and Ben Hadden come to mind as candidates also.

But, Where’s the Money Coming From?

YGT has promised a million-dollar purse at it’s concluding event at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, but where’s the money coming from? The answer’s in the sentence: Wynn Resorts. The Bryan Bros recently posted on their newsletter about a month ago, teasing YGT. Just days before, the two were photographed boarding a private jet with co-founder Grant Horvat. The partnership makes total sense for Wynn Resorts, who will presumably be the title sponsor. YGT could end up achieving ratings never before seen in the golf world. As just last summer, the internet invitational surpassed 25 million views with it’s dramatic six video series. While the focus will be more on the golf, and less on the storyline, one things for certain: the audience will be there, or will it?

The Backlash

With every new idea, or change comes criticism. Although YGT has received plenty of support, the announcement has not been widely accepted by everyone. No group has been more critical of the announcement than the X golf burnerverse, as shown below.

Scroll through the replies and you’ll find the consensus, if people are going to watch competitive golf, they want it to be the best of the best. YGT won’t be the premier golf tour, but it fills a niche that has been missing.

Conclusion

YGT doesn’t need to be a rival to the PGA Tour or LIV to succeed. Its value lies in a different vocation, one that blends high-level play, with the creators that people love. While burnerverses around the country might be skeptical, Grant and the Bryan Bros amassed over 13 million views in the just the past month. With the three stars highlighting the field, there’s plenty to be excited about for fans and sponsors alike. YGT is a great step for growing the game, something many talk about, but very little do.
