The past month has been nothing short of a dream scenario for Alex Fitzpatrick.

The dream started in Gurugram, India at the DLF Golf and Country Club, some 4,500 miles away from his hometown of Sheffield, England. DLF Golf and Country Club has always been touted as the most difficult test on the DP World Tour, and Alex was ready for the challenge. He fired rounds of 70, 68, 72 and 69 on his way to a two-stroke victory over Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra.

After years of slipping away into his brother’s shadow, he finally had his breakthrough moment.

He surged into the top 10 in the DP World Tour Rankings, putting himself in a prime position to fulfill his lifelong dream—competing alongside his brother on the game’s biggest stage, the PGA Tour.

But, following the Masters, Alex had a difficult decision to make. A choice loomed: tee it up with his brother at the Zurich Classic, or head to China to chase the DP World Tour points that could change everything.

Considering the form he and his brother were in, he took a gamble. He forewent the crucial points, and committed to the Zurich Classic with a slim chance to earn a PGA Tour card immediately.

And that’s exactly what he did.

Just 2 weeks removed from his DP World Tour victory, Alex found himself in the winner’s circle yet again.

But this time it was different.

This win came on the PGA Tour, with his brother by his side. The two have played thousands of rounds together in their lives, but none mattered more than that round last Sunday. Needing an up-and-down to seal the tournament, Matt Fitzpatrick did what any good brother would—clipping a perfect, high-spinning bunker shot to within a foot. Soon after, Alex tapped in, and his life was changed. He was a PGA Tour champion, and now was fully exempt for the following two seasons.

The $1.3 million payday was nice—but for Alex, the biggest win was mental. The two-year exemption gave him stability, and a sense of belonging. Growing up he was always in his brother’s shadow, but now, he found himself equal. In fact, Alex has already settled down in the PGA Tour oasis that is Palm Beach County.

And with that sense of belonging, comes a new sense of confidence.

That new sense of confidence was on display throughout today’s round. Alex got out to a remarkable start, birdieing 5 of his first 8 holes, coasting to a bogey-free 66. He sits in a tie for 6th heading into moving day tomorrow.
